When the path seems to be taking you farther from the destination
I find it challenging to my spirit when I see myself moving in a direction that seems contrary to what God may have said. But through a lot of hills and valleys, I've learned something very important about how God moves. Sometimes it is with quick and impactful movements – movements that seem to transport us from A to B in a nanosecond. Other times, it is with small, hardly noticeable movements that take time and cultivation.
What is always most astonishing to me, are those instances when I have arrived at the destination, only to look back and realize, in those times I thought God was taking me further from the goal, He was really routing me around something that would have caused more delay, or prevented me from getting there all together. Or, He was taking me past some things I really needed to see in order to be prepared for where I was going.
Think about how Joseph must have felt - this boy from Genesis 37-50, whom God gave such big dreams to. He shared those dreams with his brothers who, out of jealousy, tied him up, threw him in a cistern, and then sold him into slavery for what would be the equivalent today of around $150. He endured slavery and, eventually, false testimony which landed him in prison for years. It says even those he helped had forgotten him.
Forgotten. That’s how Joseph must have felt. The dreams God had spoken to his heart still burned along with his confusion. There he sat, in an Egyptian prison, which couldn’t have looked farther from his dreams of leading a nation.
His Word never returns void. If He said it will be so, then so shall it be. Two years after the man who Joseph may have thought was his last hope walked out of the prison, God called him forward. Literally overnight, God not only pulled him out of his prison cell, but placed an entire nation under his management. God had set all the pieces in place to execute in His perfect timing. I get the Holy Spirit goose bumps just thinking about it. Talk about a sudden move of God in a nanosecond. Only God could do something so amazing.
So don’t be discouraged if it feels like you’re off the path. Take a look around. Take in whatever God is showing you or asking you to experience, and trust that it’s not an alternate route, but the most direct path to achieve and maximize His glory... both in you and through you. His timing is perfect.
